Handcrafting Felt in Nepal Since 2006: The Sahir Handicraft Story

Since 2006, Sahir Handicraft Center has been turning wool into handmade felt products that carry a piece of Nepali tradition into homes around the world.

Since 2006, Sahir Handicraft Center has been quietly doing one thing well: turning wool into handmade felt products that carry a piece of Nepali tradition into homes around the world.

What started as a small effort to support local artisans in Lalitpur has grown into a dedicated initiative — but the heart of it hasn't changed. Every toy, bag, purse, and pair of shoes we make is still shaped entirely by hand, using techniques passed down through generations of Nepali craftspeople.

Where It All Began

Nepal has a long history of wool felting, rooted in the Himalayan tradition of using natural materials to create things that last. Sahir Handicraft Center was founded to preserve that tradition — not as a museum piece, but as a living craft that could support real families and reach a wider audience.

Nineteen years later, that mission hasn't changed. We've simply gotten better at it.

The People Behind the Craft

Every piece that leaves our workshop passes through the hands of skilled artisans — many of them women from the local community who have spent years mastering the art of wool felting. It's slow work. Wool has to be washed, dyed, layered, and felted by hand, using nothing but soap, water, and patient friction to bind the fibers together.

There's no shortcut for this. A machine can't replicate the texture, character, or care that goes into a hand-felted toy or a stitched felt purse. That's exactly why we've never tried to mechanize it.

Why Eco-Friendly Isn't Just a Label for Us

Wool felting is one of the most naturally sustainable crafts there is. The materials we use are biodegradable, the process uses no harsh chemicals, and the products themselves are built to last for years, not seasons.

When we say our products are 100% eco-friendly, it's not a marketing line — it's simply how wool felting has always worked, long before "sustainable" became a trend.

What We Make Today

Each category still follows the same process our artisans have used for years — just applied to new designs that fit modern homes and modern life.

Looking Ahead

Nineteen years is a long time to stay committed to one craft, but we're not finished. We're continuing to work with local artisans, expand our designs, and share Nepal's felting tradition with people who've never held a handmade felt product before.

If you're curious about how any of our products are actually made, that's exactly what we'll be covering in future posts — from the wool itself to the finished product in your hands.
